Construction industry charity the Lighthouse Club has joined a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) mental health campaign in the hope of reaching small businesses.<\/p>\n
The group, which provides financial and emotional support to construction workers and their families, is now a partner in the Working Minds<\/a> campaign, launched by the HSE last year.<\/p>\n The initiative aims to support small businesses by providing employers and workers with \u201ceasy to implement advice\u201d, including simple steps based on risk assessment to \u201creach out, recognise, respond and reflect\u201d on mental health.<\/p>\n Earlier this year, data published in CN’<\/em>s Mind Matters survey, which quizzed 1,200 construction workers on their mental health, found that 59 per cent of respondents were not receiving the appropriate level of support from their line managers<\/a> when facing mental health issues.<\/p>\n And 72 per cent of workers said they could not be honest with their employers about why they needed time off, with \u201ctight deadlines\u201d to complete work a key factor in causing stress.<\/p>\n Responding to the announcement, HSE construction division head Sarah Jardine said: \u201cThe Working Minds campaign is calling for a culture change across Britain\u2019s workplaces, where managing stress and talking about how people are coping is as routine as managing workplace safety.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBy increasing our campaign partners we are able to increase the reach and visibility of our campaign, allowing us all to achieve greater success.\u201d<\/p>\n Jardine added that the safety body was looking to expand its partners to improve visibility.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cThey will play an important role in sharing key information, as well as providing essential insight into the unique stressors experienced by people working in the industry as we continue to evolve our campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n Lighthouse Club chief executive Bill Hill said many workers were cut off from access to support, adding that the campaign was essentially reaching out to the \u201cboots on the ground\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cA crucial element of the charity\u2019s strategy is to provide a range of free and easily accessible proactive resources to support the construction community at an individual and employer level,\u201d said Hill.<\/p>\n The Working Minds<\/a> campaign aims to help businesses recognise the signs of work-related stress and make tackling issues routine.<\/p>\n For more information on the Lighthouse Club\u2019s free support services, follow this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Construction industry charity the Lighthouse Club has joined a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) mental health campaign in the hope of reaching small businesses.
