{"id":467229,"date":"2022-10-18T12:17:03","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T11:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=467229"},"modified":"2022-10-18T12:17:03","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T11:17:03","slug":"in-pictures-bouygues-unveils-first-modular-factory-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/bouygues\/in-pictures-bouygues-unveils-first-modular-factory-job-18-10-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"In pictures: Bouygues unveils first modular factory job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bouygues has completed its first self-delivered modular project in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The 491-bedroom student accommodation block at The Riverside in Canterbury was assembled using modules produced in a dedicated offsite factory in Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 430 modules were transported to the UK and installed on site, helping to ensure a shorter build time and less disturbance on site \u2013 according to the contractor \u2013 with the scheme costing a total of \u00a359m.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QoP2JK04O8Q\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The factory, owned by Bouygues\u2019 French parent company, was built specifically for the UK arm\u2019s student project<\/p>\n<p>Bouygues UK chief executive Rob Bradley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/bouygues\/bouygues-opts-for-offsite-to-soften-impact-of-labour-shortage-27-10-2021\/\">revealed to <em>Construction News<\/em> last year<\/a> that the contractor had established the facility as part of moves to use offsite methods to help cope with labour shortages.<\/p>\n<p>He said at the time that offsite allowed firms to \u201cplan and work more efficiently\u201d and it was the future for the industry, although the Canterbury build had been subject to some disruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID didn\u2019t help and then, of course, we had the issue with the Suez crisis that threw the world\u2019s shipping market into turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learned how sensitive [that] market is when you\u2019ve got a bespoke product coming from one country to another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur planning on that was thrown into a bit of turmoil, but it was nothing we couldn\u2019t overcome and we\u2019re looking now at [using offsite for] the next generation of student accommodation or residential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on the completion of the job, Bradley said: \u201cModern methods of construction is a crucial part of the future for construction, and we have learned a tremendous amount from this scheme, which stands us in great stead for future modular projects.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bouygues has completed its first self-delivered modular project in the UK.
