Bouygues and Laing O\u2019Rourke have been served warning notices by the nuclear regulator over fire-safety failures at Hinkley Point C.<\/p>\n
The contractors have each received enforcement notices relating to failings by their joint venture BYLOR JV. The Office for Nuclear Regulation also served notices to NNB Generation Company, a subsidiary of client EDF Energy, as well as crane company Reel UK.<\/p>\n
The nuclear regulator said failings were identified during pre-planned inspections at the Unit 1 HR Building site on the Somerset mega-project in November, saying that there was \u201cpotential for harm and risk of serious injury, which required regulator action\u201d.<\/p>\n
The regulator said the failings did not lead to material consequences for employees, the public or the environment, but warned each of the four companies they must make improvements by 31 March to prevent a reoccurrence.<\/p>\n
Details of the safety breach have not been revealed, but the nuclear regulator said it related to contraventions of Article 22 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, under which \u201cresponsible persons\u201d must cooperate and coordinate when they share fire-safety responsibilities for a premises.<\/p>\n
Shane Turner, the Office for Nuclear Regulation\u2019s superintending inspector and head of safety regulation at Hinkley Point C, said: \u201cThe enforcement notices require these four organisations to make improvements in fire-safety arrangements at the Hinkley Point C site.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will engage with each of them during the period of the enforcement notice to ensure positive progress is made.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for EDF Energy said: \u201cWe are working closely with our contractors BYLOR and REEK UK to ensure that the appropriate collective enhancements are made to address the matters identified by the regulator. Safety is our overriding priority and we are acting swiftly to apply the lessons learned from this inspection.\u201d<\/p>\n
