{"id":500840,"date":"2024-07-26T13:13:29","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T12:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=500840"},"modified":"2024-07-26T13:13:29","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T12:13:29","slug":"the-top-20-national-highways-contractors-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/the-top-20-national-highways-contractors-revealed-26-07-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"The top 20 National Highways contractors revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Costain was the largest single supplier to National Highways in 2023\/24, just ahead of the Balfour Beatty-linked consortium that carries out M25 upgrade work, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can reveal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It marks the third successive financial year that the contractor and consultant topped the roads body\u2019s league table, and came despite a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/costain-profit-slips-following-restructure-12-03-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dip in its roads work in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Costain was paid \u00a3450m by the government-owned agency in the year, down from the \u00a3522.4m it<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/revealed-costain-tops-national-highways-contractor-spend-10-08-2023\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received in 2022\/23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among its ongoing work is a \u00a3285m upgrade of the M6 between junctions 21a and 26, in the North West through Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second-highest recipient of National Highways cash was Connect Plus, which holds the private finance initiative contract to maintain and upgrade the M25. It was paid \u00a3447.9m, just over \u00a32m less than Costain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its total was \u00a355.3m higher than in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/revealed-costain-tops-national-highways-contractor-spend-10-08-2023\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the previous financial year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/revealed-costain-tops-national-highways-contractor-spend-10-08-2023\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a3100m more than in 2021\/22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balfour Beatty owns 15 per cent of Connect Plus and carries out its work on the road, alongside Egis and AtkinsR\u00e9alis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, the orbital road was totally closed in both directions, between junction 10 and 11, for the first time ever as work to demolish the Clearmount bridleway bridge and install a large gantry began in earnest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the first of five scheduled M25 closures in the Surrey area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balfour Beatty itself was paid \u00a3392.2m by National Highways.
