Willmott Dixon has landed a prime defence project to construct 11 buildings at an army barracks in Rutland, in the East Midlands.<\/span><\/p>\n

The contractor will develop 15 buildings at Kendrew Barracks, of which 11 will be completely new. The other four will be refurbished or retrofitted.<\/span><\/p>\n

The buildings, measuring some 13,000 square metres in total, will house the 18 Army Education Centre and 1 Military Working Dogs regiments, as they transfer from the nearby St George\u2019s Barracks, which will close in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facilities will include 173 kennels, a vet centre, training spaces, staff offices and stores for the regiments. They will also include a gym and formal headquarters. Willmott Dixon will further refurbish 110 metres of hangars.<\/span><\/p>\n

The firm was appointed to the job by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), and took the job via the Crown Commercial Service framework. Work is scheduled to complete in December 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

The barracks will stay open during the work, and the build will target net-zero carbon emissions in operation. The firm will also use modern methods of construction for the kennels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Willmott Dixon director Nick Heath said: \u201cOperating on a live barracks, as we will be throughout this project, creates unique challenges in terms of ongoing operations, but our wealth of experience within the sector means we are well-positioned to understand and overcome these.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis significant investment from the Army, supported by the DIO, is set to create high-quality facilities for those stationed at Kendrew Barracks. It\u2019s always a privilege to contribute to national defence by making sure the estate meets the needs of those who access and use the facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire scheme has been considered in relation to its current and future impact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is the latest in a number of jobs scooped by Willmott Dixon this year, including<\/span> a \u00a355m police headquarters rebuild<\/span><\/a> in Hertfordshire, in February,<\/span> and a \u00a360m science research hub<\/span><\/a>, in May.<\/span><\/p>\n
