{"id":513551,"date":"2025-01-31T12:45:56","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T12:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=513551"},"modified":"2025-01-31T14:24:33","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T14:24:33","slug":"watchdog-takes-no-action-over-building-collapse-at-graham-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/health-and-safety\/watchdog-takes-no-action-over-building-collapse-at-graham-site-31-01-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Watchdog takes no action over building collapse at Graham site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is not taking any action over the collapse of a building in Glasgow city centre, <em>Construction News<\/em> can reveal.<\/p>\n<p>No laws or regulations were breached in the incident, according to HSE inspectors who visited the scene in the hours after the four-storey building came down.<\/p>\n<p>The former office at 138 Hydepark Street, the site of a proposed 26-storey student accommodation block, was being prepared for demolition when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/health-and-safety\/building-collapses-at-graham-site-23-01-2025\/\">structure fell in on 22 January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Graham is main contractor on the job, while the client is its development arm Graham Investment Projects.<\/p>\n<p>No one was hurt in the incident, which took place around 3.20pm, but the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/news\/14214506\/terrifying-moment-glasgow-building-collapses\/\">Scottish Sun<\/a><\/em> reported one worker had to sprint out of the building after he started to feel it wobble.<\/p>\n<p>It quoted a witness saying that the structure was not supposed to be demolished for \u201ca while\u201d and the workers were in shock.<\/p>\n<p>A video published by the newspaper shows the broken structure collapsing in front of shocked onlookers.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday (30 January), an HSE spokesperson confirmed the regulator would take no action over the incident. He said: \u201cOur inspectors visited this site and determined that the collapse was due to a failure that was not foreseeable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A photo of the site published by <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.demolitionnews.com\/2025\/01\/23\/glasgow-collapse-update\/\">Demolition News<\/a><\/em> last week showed that the demolition contractor on site was Bardem, a specialist based in nearby Paisley.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tQjYHkMKjus?si=fgXkZJzxBAZOTxuo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Graham submitted plans for the \u00a371m student accommodation project to Glasgow City Council in December.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed scheme would see 410 purpose-built student accommodation bedspaces split across 236 studios and 174 cluster flats.<\/p>\n<p>Permission has not yet been granted, with the company stating in a press release last year that it expected a decision to be made in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>Bardem declined to comment.
