Balfour Beatty will not seek a main contractor role in the rejigged \u00a337bn New Hospital Programme (NHP), its outgoing chief executive Leo Quinn has said.<\/p>\n
Last month, NHS England said it was seeking 10 contractors<\/a> to join the Hospital 2.0 Alliance (H2A) framework to deliver 34 new or redeveloped hospitals between 2025 and 2039, in three separate five-year “waves”.<\/p>\n But speaking to analysts after Balfour Beatty announced its latest full-year financial results<\/a> on 12 March, Quinn said the UK’s biggest contractor will not be seeking a prominent role in the programme.<\/p>\n \u201cWe delivered the Midland Met hospital<\/a> at great expense to ourselves,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cWe\u2019re not bidding on that [the NHP]\u2026 but we are prepared to work in an advisory capacity where we\u2019re not taking construction risks.\u201d<\/p>\n The Midland Met was originally set to cost \u00a3297m and be opened by October 2018.<\/p>\n Carillion, which won the contract under a PFI agreement, fell behind on the programme before it went into liquidation in January 2018.<\/p>\n In October 2018, Balfour Beatty won a \u00a313m contract to carry out remedial work on the site and was appointed to complete the hospital with a\u00a0\u00a3267m deal in December 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n However, the opening was delayed by a year due to labour and material availability, as well as the need to change some cladding due to fire regulations.<\/p>\n Under the revised NHP, each contractor will be expected to deliver detailed design, construction, commissioning and handover of the major hospital builds outlined by the government, as well as any other healthcare construction work.<\/p>\n
