Offsite specialist Merit Holdings has insisted its future is \u201ctremendously exciting\u201d despite a huge drop in pre-tax profit in its latest full-year results.<\/p>\n
Pre-tax profit at the Northumberland-based firm plunged by 72 per cent from \u00a38.4m to \u00a32.3m in the 12 months to 30 June 2024.<\/p>\n
Its turnover fell 8 per cent from \u00a394.3m to \u00a386.6m over the same period.<\/p>\n
This resulted in a narrower margin of 2.7 per cent compared with 8.9 per cent in the previous financial year.<\/p>\n
Merit said uncertainty linked to political events, including elections in the UK and US last year, caused \u201ca number of delays to the start of certain projects and deferment of others\u201d.<\/p>\n
Cash at hand fell from \u00a36.7m to \u00a32.7m. The firm said: \u201cUnexpected delays in contract awards can cause short-term volatility in liquidity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Merit paid no dividends compared with \u00a33m in the previous financial year.<\/p>\n
It added that earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation \u2013 another measure of corporate profitability \u2013 had been affected by a change in accounting processes within the wider group, \u201cwhich has resulted in profits being reduced in subsidiaries and now shown in [parent company] Merit Group Services\u2019 own results\u201d.<\/p>\n
But in the strategic report accompanying the accounts, director Matthew McGrady said: \u201cThe future for Merit continues to be tremendously exciting.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur pipeline of opportunities is greater than ever and the average size of these potential contracts has risen significantly.\u201d<\/p>\n
The firm said its gross margin was \u201calmost 19 per cent\u201d in the latest year, up from under 18 per cent in the prior period.<\/p>\n
This growth reflected \u201cimproved efficiencies and utilisation within the manufacturing facilities\u201d, said McGrady.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would expect this to continue to improve with more added value produced in-house and therefore less reliance on certain subcontractors.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cOur unique platform [design] continues to gain traction every day across new types of facilities and different industry sectors.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe we will continue to grow at a rapid pace to satisfy demand across all our key markets, not just in the UK but overseas, particularly in the US, Africa and Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Merit said a \u201csignificant\u201d expansion to its second Northumberland factory had been approved, which would give it \u201ccapability to deliver annual turnover to around \u00a3450m\u201d.<\/p>\n
The firm noted that it spent almost \u00a36m in research and development last year and added: \u201cWe have considered the feasibility of a third factory to future proof our ambitious growth plans, and this is still being considered both in the UK as well as overseas.\u201d<\/p>\n
This confidence stands in stark contrast to the fortunes of the broader offsite industry recently.<\/p>\n
