Turnover increased from \u00a3198.4m to \u00a3212m in the latest accounts, but the firm\u2019s margin entered negative territory at -3.1 per cent compared with a healthy 9.7 per cent in 2022.<\/p>\n
In their strategic report accompanying the latest accounts, Bouygues E&S\u2019s directors said the firm\u2019s 2023 performance was \u201csignificantly affected\u201d by a loss-making contract in Germany, which alone accounted for an operating loss of \u00a319.3m in 2023.<\/p>\n
This continued into last year with a further impact of \u00a324.6m.<\/p>\n
They added that the company had increased its provision regarding an ongoing contract dispute.<\/p>\n
Litigation is in progress, according to a note in the accounts, which added that the firm\u2019s \u201cmaximum risk exposure does not exceed \u00a380m\u201d.<\/p>\n
The directors said they believed the claim \u201ccan be successfully resisted by the company\u201d.<\/p>\n
Bouygues E&S insisted that the pre-tax loss in 2023 \u201cis not reflective of the overall financial health of the business\u201d.<\/p>\n
The accounts added that the firm\u2019s core UK operations \u201cremain strong\u201d with revenue of \u00a3134.9m and a profit of \u00a39.6m in 2023.<\/p>\n
However, UK-related turnover was down on the \u00a3153.6m recorded in 2022, while European revenue increased from \u00a344.8m to \u00a377.1m.<\/p>\n
The firm\u2019s year-end cash at hand was a healthy \u00a3101.5m, up from \u00a385.7m at the start of 2023.<\/p>\n
No dividends were paid out and the firm took out an \u00a34.8m unsecured inter-company loan, repayable within 12 months.<\/p>\n
The directors said that new orders had been secured in 2023, and Bouygues E&S \u201cis continuously developing additional expertise and investing in new activities\u201d in close collaboration with other Bouygues companies in order to widen the services it offers.<\/p>\n
The average number of employees in 2022 was 255, down from 265 the previous year.<\/p>\n
Bouygues E&S\u2019s wage bill rose from \u00a318.3m to \u00a319.1m.<\/p>\n
The firm carries out engineering, construction, servicing and maintenance of \u201chighly technical facilities in critical and controlled environments\u201d, its accounts said.<\/p>\n
This includes projects for pharmaceutical facilities, laboratories, printing-press halls, data centres and energy-from-waste plants.<\/p>\n
Bouygues E&S\u2019s directors did not identify any material impact on the business from the ongoing Ukraine war. However, they have applied \u201cdownside sensitivities\u201d to the firm\u2019s cashflow forecasts out to 2026, covering the potential impact of inflation and the availability of labour and materials.<\/p>\n
