More positively, detailed planning approvals and project starts increased quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, providing a boost to the sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>North East overview<\/h3>\n<p>Adding up to \u00a31.52bn, work starting on-site in the North East during the three months to March increased 211 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 104 per cent up on a year ago. Major projects (\u00a3100m or more in value) totalled \u00a3647m, an increase on the preceding three months and the previous year. Underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m) grew six per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis to stand 17 per cent up compared with a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards in the North East decreased by 54 per cent during the three months and fell by 19 per cent against the previous year to total \u00a3671m. Major projects totalled \u00a3170m during the period, 72 per cent lower than the preceding three months but up against the previous year when no major contracts were awarded. Underlying contract awards decreased 34 per cent (SA) on the preceding three months and fell 39 per cent against the previous year, totalling \u00a3500m.<\/p>\n<p>Totalling \u00a31.1bn, detailed planning approvals increased 45 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 51 per cent up compared with the previous year. Major detailed planning approvals increased against the preceding three months and the previous year, when no major projects were approved, totalling \u00a3301m. Underlying approvals totalled \u00a3796m during the period, 13 per cent up on the preceding three months and a 10 percent increase against the previous year.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Hotel and Leisure accounted for 25 per cent of work starting on-site in the North East during the three months to March, with the value adding up to \u00a3374m, making it the most active sector. The sector experienced a 403 per cent increase against a year ago. Private housing at \u00a3305m accounted for the second largest share of sector starts (20 per cent), having increased 16 per cent against last year\u2019s levels.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities accounted for a nine per cent share of project starts, with the sector increasing four-digits compared with a year ago to total \u00a3129m. The sector experienced a four per cent decline against the previous year to total \u00a3328m. In contrast, industrial more than quadrupled year-on-year, bringing its total to \u00a3213m, a 19 per cent share of consents.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities accounted for 18 per cent of sector approvals, with the sector having jumped 277 per cent against the previous year.
