Major projects (\u00a3100m or more in value) starting on site totalled \u00a3670m, a 97 per cent increase against the preceding three months but one per cent down on last year\u2019s levels. At \u00a31.54bn, underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m) fell 10 per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis to stand 35 per cent lower than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards in the North West totalled \u00a31.78bn, 11 per cent higher than the previous quarter but 20 per cent down compared to last year&#8217;s levels. Major contract awards totalled \u00a3762m, 279 per cent higher than the preceding three months and up on a year ago when no major contracts were awarded. Underlying contract awards, on the other hand, fell 20 per cent (SA) against the preceding three months and decreased 54 per cent against last year\u2019s levels to total \u00a31.02bn.<\/p>\n<p>Adding up to \u00a32.59bn, detailed planning approvals slipped back 17 per cent against the preceding three months and decreased 36 per cent on the previous year. Major projects, at \u00a3810m, were 30 per cent lower than the preceding three months and fell 37 per cent on the previous year. Underlying approvals decreased two per cent (SA) against the preceding three months to stand 35 per cent down against last year\u2019s levels to total \u00a31.78bn.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing accounted for the greatest share (50 per cent) of work starting on site in the North West during the three months to March, despite the value having declined 32 per cent against the previous year. Private housing construction starts added up to \u00a31.11bn. The industrial sector also decreased 39 per cent from last year to a total of \u00a3171m, an eight per cent share of starts in the region.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, accounting for 11 per cent, hotel &amp; leisure starts jumped 301 per cent on a year ago to total \u00a3242m. Infrastructure starts grew 19 per cent year-on-year, totalling \u00a3175m. The value of approvals in the sector declined 64 per cent against last year\u2019s levels to total \u00a3596m, however.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, accounting for the same share, Industrial approvals increased 50 per cent on the previous year, adding up to \u00a3595m. Utilities also experienced a strong period, totalling \u00a3531m. Here, the value of approvals jumped more than 14 times against a year ago to account for 21 per cent of the total value.
