More positively, there was an uptick in project starts and detailed planning approvals quarter-on-quarter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>South West overview<\/h3>\n<p>Work commencing on site in the South West added up to \u00a31.85bn during the three months to March, having increased 15 per cent compared with the preceding quarter and remained unchanged year-on-year. Major projects (over \u00a3100m in value) starting on site totalled \u00a3221m, 11 per cent up against the previous quarter, but a 19 per cent decrease on a year ago. Underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m) fell 14 per cent against the preceding quarter on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis but increased three per cent against the previous year, totalling \u00a31.63bn.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards decreased 33 per cent against the preceding quarter to stand four per cent up on the previous year, totalling \u00a31.41bn. Major project contract awards totalled \u00a3200m, a 58 per cent decrease on the preceding quarter and 12 per cent lower than the previous year. Underlying contract awards fell eight per cent against the previous quarter (SA) but stood seven per cent up on last year\u2019s levels, totalling \u00a31.21bn.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a32.73bn, detailed planning approvals increased 15 per cent against the preceding quarter to stand 45 per cent up year-on-year. Major approvals totalled \u00a3771m, having increased 57 per cent against the preceding quarter and jumped 285 per cent compared to last year. Underlying detailed planning approvals grew 11 per cent (SA) against the preceding quarter and increased 16 per cent against a year ago to total \u00a31.96bn.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing grew 12 per cent against the preceding year and accounted for the greatest share (43 per cent) of starts in the region, totalling \u00a3791m. Social housing was another region to experience a strong period, having increased 33 per cent from a year ago to total \u00a3325m, an 18 per cent share of starts in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial tripled on a year ago to total \u00a3266m, a 14 per cent share of starts in the region. Infrastructure was also nearly five times up on the previous year. Private housing approvals fell 23 per cent against the previous year to a total of \u00a3860m. Offices, on the other hand, experienced a strong period, having jumped 406 per cent to account for 18 per cent at \u00a3492m.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a3348m, approvals in the industrial sector grew 281 per cent against the previous year, to account for a 13 per cent share.
