Project starts declined compared to both periods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Wales overview<\/h3>\n<p>Totalling \u00a3606m, work starting on-site in Wales experienced a 28 per cent decline against the preceding three months to stand 18 per cent down on the previous year. Major projects were absent (\u00a3100m or more) during the period, down against the preceding three months and the previous year. Underlying project starts decreased 28 per cent against the preceding three months (SA), to stand three per cent down on the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards in Wales increased by 115 per cent against the preceding three months and experienced a 126 per cent increase against the previous year to total \u00a31.7bn. Major projects totalled \u00a31.25bn during the period, a 488 per cent increase against the preceding three months and an increase on the previous year, when no major projects were present. \u00a0Underlying contract awards experienced a weak performance, having decreased 12 per cent (SA) against the preceding three months. The value decreased by 40 per cent against the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Adding up to \u00a31.0bn, detailed planning approvals in Wales decreased 57 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 32 per cent up against the previous year. Major projects totalled \u00a3200m during the period, an 87 per cent decrease against the preceding three months but a 67 per cent increase against the previous year. \u00a0Underlying approvals decreased five per cent against the preceding three months (SA) and increased 25% against the previous year.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing construction starts totalled \u00a3106m and accounted for the largest share of the sector (18 per cent), despite this, the sector experienced a 56 per cent decline against the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Offices accounted for the second largest share of sector starts (17 per cent). The sector experienced the sharpest growth of any in Wales, rising 24 times against the previous year to total \u00a3101m.
