Underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m in value) fell 11 per cent against the preceding quarter (SA) to stand 21 per cent lower than a year ago, totalling \u00a31.41bn.<\/p>\n<p>Totalling \u00a31.77bn, main contract awards fell 65 per cent on the preceding quarter and decreased 24 per cent against the previous year. Major projects, at \u00a3405m, declined 88 per cent against the preceding three months and fell 55 per cent on last year\u2019s levels. Underlying contract awards remained flat (SA) against the preceding quarter and fell five per cent on a year ago to total \u00a31.36bn.<\/p>\n<p>Detailed planning approvals in the West Midlands added up to \u00a31.53bn during the period, a 52 per cent decrease on the preceding quarter and 38 per cent lower than the previous year. Totalling \u00a3100m, major project approvals fell 92 per cent compared to the preceding quarter to stand 86 per cent down on the previous year. At \u00a31.43bn, underlying detailed planning approvals slipped back 18 per cent (SA) on the preceding quarter to stand 19 per cent down on a year ago.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing accounted for 34 per cent of work starting in the West Midlands, with the value adding up to \u00a3619m. The sector grew 14 per cent compared with a year ago. Utilities accounted for a 13 per cent share, having jumped 126 per cent to reach \u00a3239m.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, accounting for a 14 per cent share, social housing fell 47 per cent against last year to total \u00a3261m. Accounting for nine per cent, the sector jumped more than seven times against last year to total \u00a3130m. Hotel &amp; leisure approvals was the only other sector to experience growth, having increased 28 per cent from a year ago to total \u00a3125m.
