Planning approvals also experienced a mixed performance, whereas main contract awards declined on both periods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Yorkshire &amp; the Humber overview<\/h3>\n<p>Totalling \u00a33.99bn, work starting on-site in Yorkshire &amp; the Humber during the three months to March increased 269 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 40 per cent down on a year ago. Major projects (\u00a3100m or more) totalled \u00a32.79bn during the period, an increase against the preceding three months, where no major projects commenced, to stand 46 per cent down on the previous year. Underlying work (less than \u00a3100m in value) starting on-site fell 24 per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis and declined 14 per cent compared with a year ago to total \u00a31.19bn.<\/p>\n<p>Adding up to \u00a31.39bn, contract awards in Yorkshire &amp; the Humber fell 24 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 41 per cent lower than a year ago. Major projects reaching the main contract awarded stage added up to \u00a3426m, having increased 17 per cent against the previous three months to stand 59 per cent down on last year\u2019s levels.\u00a0 Underlying main contract awards, at \u00a3966m, declined 25 per cent (SA) against the preceding three months and stood 28 per cent down on the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Detailed planning approvals totalled \u00a33.03bn, 6 per cent lower than the preceding three months but one per cent higher than last year. Totalling \u00a31.81bn, major projects increased 11 per cent compared with the previous three months and increased 8 per cent against last year\u2019s figures. Underlying approvals, on the other hand, declined five per cent (SA) against the preceding three months to stand eight per cent down compared with last year\u2019s levels to total \u00a31.22bn.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Utilities was the most active sector, accounting for 63 per cent of work starting on-site, while the value decreased by 51 per cent compared with the previous year to total \u00a32.53bn. Totalling \u00a3646m, private housing bucked the national trend, having increased 17 per cent from a year ago to account for 16 per cent of starts in the region, the second largest sector.<\/p>\n<p>Offices jumped 391 per cent against last year to total \u00a395m, a two per cent share of starts in the region, with the sector experiencing the sharpest growth. Approvals totalled \u00a31.41bn, a 19 per cent increase against the previous year. Industrial accounted for the second largest share of approvals (22 per cent), with the value totalling \u00a3671m, the sharpest growth of any sector, rising 763 per cent against the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Private housing at \u00a3572m didn\u2019t fare so well, with the sector declining 35 per cent against the previous year to account for 19 per cent of the total value. Health, at \u00a3124m, experienced a strong period, with the value of approvals having quadrupled against the previous year, to account for four per cent of the total value.<\/p>\n<h3>Value of project approvals in the Yorkshire &amp;
